Woodland

I wanted to create a multi-sensory small world which features the colours, smells and animals that we have met whilst reading our current favourite book ‘The Squirrels that Squabbled’ by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. It was really simple and easy to set up using bits from my spice and dry cupboard.

Set Up

To create this multi-sensory small world activity I used rice, popping corn, green lentils, blue rice which I had dyed blue for a previous activity, cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices (which I had dried in the oven for about 3 hours at the lowest temperature setting), star anise and cloves. The pine cones and fir tree were from the garden and the woodland creatures we had in our toy box. I created this small world in a large flat saucepan as I thought the sound of the lentils, rice and popping corn against the saucepan would add an extra dimension to the multi-sensory experience.

So when my 2 year old spotted this multi-sensory small world activity he was immediately drawn to it. He spent a while just picking up the spices and asking “what’s that?” and smelling them. For this reason this activity was great to encourage his natural curiosity. After he had a good explore and rummage he then started to use the animals to play.

My 2 year old boy said hello to each animal before enabling them to explore each of the different areas and then letting them nibble on some ‘food.’ My toddler was very cute and was saying “yum yum” as each animal pretended to eat something. For this reason this activity was marvelous for encouraging and observing his imagination.

As this multi-sensory activity was set up in a sauce pan we have left it out on my toddler’s little table and he has spent more time exploring the multi-sensory small world with his animals.
