Cooking with Water

Everything you need for this activity you will have in the kitchen. Little ones love playing with water, saucepans and kitchen utensils so this activity will always be a winner.

This is another activity which is quick to set up and as long as you follow our tip of putting towels down to soak up excess water.Also it is really easy to tidy up as well.

Set Up:

I always put towels down under the pots and pans because my floor can get very slippery. The towels also help with the quick tidy up afterwards. I always do this activity on the day we swap dirty towels for clean towels. The dirty towels go on the floor and then when the activity is finished they go straight into the washing machine.

Whatever pots I’m not using to make dinner later go on the floor. I like to use a mix of big and small pots and plastic bowels so that I can use vocabulary such as ‘big’ and ‘small’ with my little one.

I never put too much water in the pots. Just enough so that he can pour and stir the water around. I also pour the water into the pots in front of my son to build up some excitement as he likes to watch and listen as the water is poured.

And then we just stir and pour and mix and then stir some more. I just follow his lead, all the while narrating what he is doing and chatting to him.

This is an activity that my son really enjoys and I will sit with him and play together. But it is also an activity he is quite happy to play with by himself. So before the activity starts I make myself a cup of tea. By the time my tea is cool enough to drink, I’ve spent a sufficient amount of time playing and my little one is then happy to carry on stirring while I sit opposite him and drink my tea.

Of course please do not leave your child unattended around water!!!
