Autumn Seed Play
This is a great natural loose parts play activity idea that is great for toddlers and older children too. Loose parts play is a great opportunity for children to explore objects in whatever way they wish. It is a chance for them to be creative and use and develop their imagination. We had been reading the brilliant and beautiful book A Seed is Sleepy. This book is an information book all about seeds and the journey a seed takes to grow into another plant. M has found this book so interesting. The illustrations are stunning and the text features some great vocabulary.
Set Up
My two have absolutely loved collecting up autumn treasure of acorns, conker, chestnut seeds and pine cones. So it is was a case of rummaging through coat pockets, bags, car doors, the bottom of the buggy and putting them all in this wooden cutlery insert. The wooden cutlery insert is a great way to display and keep all their treasures organised. I also added some pebbles and wood slices some of which were numbered. I also left them the book “ A Seed is Sleepy”
F went straight for the acorns and started rolling them around in her hands. M wanted to look inside the book to see if she could match the seeds in the tray to those in the book. As with loose parts play there are no rules, no instructions so I left them to it. Towers were built, patterns were created… M started counting out numbers of conkers etc to match the numbers on the wood slices. F started transporting and hiding the different seeds all around the house.
They have both been so creative with this natural loose parts play idea and have used the various items in so many different ways . We have kept the tray out and as it is so easy to tidy all the bits back in and move it around the house; they have been able to bring it into the kitchen whilst I am cooking and carry on playing there. This type of natural loose parts play is something that we need to do more of as it is so great for their imaginations and creativity!
