The Confused Playdough Monster
This playdough activity for toddlers and children is inspired by the mixed up Monster at the beginning of Anna Llenas’ wonderful story ‘The Colour Monster.’
This loose parts activity is a great opportunity to explore our complicated emotions through play.
Set Up
To set up this playdough and loose parts activity I simply put out the ivory lavender scented playdough and the loose parts from our May box and we were ready to go.
Together we read the start of ‘The Colour Monster’ story and talked about what was happening inside the monster. I explained that we were going to make our own mixed up colour monster and my son was off pressing the loose parts into the playdough.
And there is just something to satisfying about sticking loose parts into playdough.
As we pressed each of the coloured loose parts into the playdough we discussed each of the emotions that they represent. We took it in turns to share when we had felt that emotion and what had happened to spark that feeling off inside us: “I was sad when I got my fingers stuck in the door. I cried. Daddy cuddled me.”
These are such powerful conversations to have with our children and they are never too young to learn about them.
