Playing with Acorns

This is an easy outdoor activity to try with toddlers and older children. M was given the book Lost Words by Jackie Roberts and Robert Macfarlane as a gift and it is so beautiful. Each page is dedicated to a natural world word which the author believes is disappearing from the vocabulary of our children. It is such a great invitation to get outside and explore. I believe that being outside and exploring nature is such an important thing to do with children.

Set Up

So all I had prepared was getting the book out, a basket and finding the perfect location to gather our acorns. I also had our enamel bowl ready filled with water for washing and playing with the acorns.

So the girls really enjoyed collecting the acorns and were more than happy to spend most of the afternoon hunting for them. Once we had collected plenty and had persuaded the girls that they would enjoy the next part too, we headed back to wash the acorns. Water, acorns whats not to love? They really enjoyed plopping individual acorns in one at a time.

The acorns got a very good wash. Before being patted off on the tea towels to dry. We have since roasted the acorns in the oven so that we can continue to play with them. Exploring nature is so important for children and this is such a simple, fun outdoor activity to do exactly that. My two enjoyed this so much that they are constantly now picking up acorns and we have repeated it several times.
