Building Fireworks

Having a black tray or a tuff tray is great for creating visually very enticing activities for little ones. The bright colours of the pom poms, buttons and spoons against the black tray makes the activity very attractive. This is an easy fireworks activity for toddlers, babies and children which has wonderful speech and language opportunities and will keep them entertained throughout a wet and cold November afternoon.

So this was really simple and easy to set up. I arranged the poms poms, buttons and spoons into a star shape on the tray. As much as possible I tried to organise the bigger buttons and poms poms in the middle of the firework and the smaller bits towards the edge. This was because I wanted it to not only be a fireworks sensory activity but I wanted to focus on my toddlers speech and language skills by using “bigger” and “smaller” vocabulary.

Although I wanted my 2 year old and me to focus on using “bigger” and “smaller” vocabularly, I still wanted this to be an open ended activity. I wanted him to use his imagination and curiosity and interact with the poms poms and buttons as he wanted to.

At first he just stared at the activity and seemed a little taken aback with the colours before settling down and moving all the bits around the tray.

I copied him and started describing what I was doing “that big pom pom would look nice next to that small green button.” I then asked some opened questions for example “I wonder what would happen if I put all these little poms in a big pile here?” This was to encourage my 2 year old to use longer sentences and encourage thinking skills.

By the end of the activity the poms poms and buttons no longer looked like a firework but the tray still looked very visually appealing and I left it out for a few days so we could revisit it.

This was a lovely fireworks activity for toddlers, babies and children which has wonderful speech and language opportunities.
