Posting Letters

Posting is always a hit with toddlers and older children alike and this activity takes that love of posting and turns it into an opportunity for learning. Super easy to set up and can be adapted to make it more challenging to suit a range of abilities.

Phonics Posting Activity Idea

Set Up:

This was very easy to set up. I took the box from our Worries Activity Box a post it (although a piece of paper and sticky tape or blue tack would also work) I also cut up one of the sides from the cardboard box that our activities come in. I then on one side of the cut up strips chose to write “m” for mummy and a “f” for my youngest daughter. You could choose different sounds depending on what your child is learning. This could also be adapted for name recognition or even word recognition.

So first F wrote letters to herself and mummy. I hadn’t initially planned for her to write the letters but when she saw me with the pen writing on the cardboard she of course wanted to join in. So once I had addressed them to either “m” or “f” she then wrote a message. Which in itself is a brilliant mark making exercise and helps teach there is a purpose for all those squiggles. I loved listening to her dictate her messages as she wrote them down.

Then it was time to get posting. I wrote a “f” on the first sticky note and stuck it to the post box. F then had to search all her letters to see which ones belonged in the “f” post box. At first she just tried to post any she could find but when I pointed out that the letter on the front didn’t match and could she see any that looked the same she suddenly got it. And I then reinforced the sound the letter made each time she posted one. WEll done you found another “f”. “F” for ….. This was definitely a huge hit and we will be doing this again with other sounds soon.
