Blackcurrant Splat
Physical objects and interactive learning is so vital especially in the early years. So using the play dough from our August Activity we created a fun and interactive way to learn counting for my youngest and take away for my eldest.
Set Up
Using the purple play dough from our August Gardening Activity Box I rolled many little balls of purple play dough which was actually very therapeutic and did build up the sense of anticipation for my little ones who were watching and keen to know what was going to happen! I added a wooden toy hammer for the splatting but a rolling bin, wooden block or even a spoon would work well too!
So my two took the splatting in turns. First F and for her each time I would put out a small number of “blackcurrants” for her to count and splat. To start off with she just pointed at them as she counted them and often she would keep counting even when there were no more to point out. But then once we swapped to just counting as we splatted she couldn’t continue to count as there was nothing for to splat and this worked much better.
For M each time I would put out a number of blackcurrants. First she would need to count them before I told her how many I would eat. Then she would splat the ones I had eaten and find how many were left. They both had so much fun that once all the blackcurrants I had made had been splatted F took it upon herself to create more to count and splat. A simple but fun maths activity which will make the learning memorable!
