All Aboard the Sorting Train
As a teacher I always tried to design activities that matched my pupil’s interests as much as possible. My 2 year old is a train enthusiast and thanks to Father Christmas he has a huge collection of different coloured trains. Therefore I knew that this train sorting game was perfect for him. This motivating maths sorting game is quick and simple to set up and teaches colour recognition and sorting.
Sticking with our New Year’s resolution to buy less stuff, everything I used for this maths game was already in our toy bags.
Set Up
This maths train sorting game took me less than 5 minutes to set up. I used my tuff train, our Brio track, the Brio turntable, a mix of Thomas the Tank Engine and Brio trains and three different coloured pieces of paper.

My 2 year old was immediately drawn to this train sorting game after his nap. His need to have a snack and change out of his pyjamas were immediately forgotten when he saw this set up.
I demonstrated and explained what we needed to do and then he was off sorting and naming the colours of each train. Some of the trains had other colours on so these were discussed but if your train loving child is a little older this could be a great maths game to teach Venn diagrams.
After my 2 year old had sorted the trains into their respective colors, he immediately asked to repeat this train sorting game.
Such a simple concept, quick set up and can be differentiated so easily that we will definitely be repeating this maths games.
