Play Dough Vegetables

Inspired by our brilliant gardening book: Sunflowers, Shoots and Muddy Boots one of the activities from our August subscription box is creating our own fruits and vegetables from play dough. Play dough is not only great for children’s motor skills but also their creativity and can be a great sensory activity.

Set Up

Using the coloured play dough from our August Gardening activity box I simply added some various fruits and vegetables that we already had at home. I added the fruit and vegetables so that they had something to look at and try and create.

It was fascinating to watch the girls use the play dough differently. M wanted to create life like versions of the fruit and vegetables that she could see. Whereas F wanted to use the fruit and vegetables as tools for her playdough. The courgette was her rolling pin and she created great patterns by then pressing the broccoli head and strawberries into her flattened play dough. “Look a strawberry!”

Play dough is always great for improving motor skills and creativity too. But in this activity it also gave us an opportunity to start a discussion about the fruit and vegetables and which we enjoyed eating or which we hadn’t tried for a while.
